The Masters: Round 4 talking points

Bubba Watson wins the Masters, finishing three-shots ahead of Jordan Spieth and Sweden’s Jonas Blixt. The lefty claimed his second Green Jacket in three years, after seeing off his playing partner, Jordan Spieth, with a controlled final day performance. Watson combined a delicate touch around the greens, with the powerful long game we have become accustom to. A deserving champion.

Debutants Jordan Spieth and Jonas Blixt impressed throughout the tournament, and at times on Sunday, it was Spieth –not Watson, who looked to have the momentum. When the dust settles on his final round, the 20-year-old Texan will draw on his experience this week, and looks set to win a few majors of his own.

Rickie Fowler only started working with Butch Harmon late last year, but the young American already seems to be seeing the results. A top-five finish at the Masters will give Fowler a major confidence boost, and could help him take his game to the next level and become a major champion himself. As he came off the course, Fowler gave his thoughts on how the younger players fared, he said. “It’s always fun seeing the young guys play well.  We don’t want to let the older guys get too many wins.”

The performance of EurAsia Cup captain, Miguel Angel Jimenez, raised a few eyebrows this week – as did his Ray-Bans. The popular Spaniard was one-under for his final round, and finished fourth overall. He seemed to enjoy every minute of this year’s Masters, and strolled the fairways with swagger.

Man of the round

It may seem cliché to give this one to the champion, but Bubba is more than deserving. Carding a 69 on the final day, in the final paring, with two fired-up rookies and a few old heads snapping at your heels is a real achievement. He held his nerve all day and made putts at crucial times – and then there was the drive at 13, just the 366-yards.

Painful to watch

Although he played well yesterday, Jordan Spieth’s approach to the 12th had us all squirming. The rookie was just a few yards short of the green, but it was enough to see his ball – and his chances of winning – disappear into the water.

Tip of the cap

Competing in the Masters is a daunting task – competing for your first time is even more so. Jonas Blixt shot a one-under-par 71 in his final round, and was under-par for every round he played this week. Joint second in your first Masters ain’t bad. Blixt remained calm under pressure, saying: “I don’t feel like the moment really got to me.”

Stats of the day

Bubba Watson driving distance was a huge 316-yards in round 4. In fact, every round of the tournament saw an increase in the champions length off the tee – no surprise he finished first in the overall driving distance statistics.

Jordan Spieth finished 20th in the overall birdie rankings for the tournament, surprising since he finished in second place.

Rory McIlroy was level-par for the par-5’s this week, but second in the overall driving distance stats. Proving that the Irishman must improve his short-game if he is to get his hands on the Green Jacket.

Soundbites

“Today I hit a sand wedge in there; I hit 56‑degree sand wedge in there.” – Bubba Watson on his club selection for his second shot at the par-5 13th.

“Way to go Bubba !!! Enjoy your victory. See you on the plane to Gleneagles.” –Tom Watson via twitter

“He’s gone from like 12 and a half to 14” – Rickie Fowler when asked how Bubba Watson has matured since his first Masters victory.

“I mean, that’s what that hole is famous for is the swirling winds.  So when I got over it, I felt like there was no way it was into.  I felt like it was just dead.” – Jordan Spieth explains his miscalculation on his tee-shot to 12.

Oh dear

Peter Alliss did his fair share of moaning in the final round, and all through the championship for that matter. The veteran presenter criticised the Augusta National course at all most every turn, complaining that it was too difficult, and not in the spirit of the game. How about enjoying the action, and watching one of the greatest golf tournaments unfold, on one of the finest courses in the world Peter?
