The Open Final Qualifying scores: Big names have mixed results

Final Qualifying for the 153rd Open is done, and it was a mixed bag for the big name stars.

Lee Westwood, Justin Walters, Lucas Herbert, and Dean Burmester each won at their respective qualifying site, punching four tickets to Royal Portrush.

But for others, it was a day of disappointment.

Graeme McDowell missed out on a place at his home Open in a strong field at Royal Cinque Ports, along with Ian Poulter and his son Luke.

There were early withdrawals at West Lancashire for English duo Sam Horsfield and Alex Fitzpatrick, too.

But the best story of the day also came on the Merseyside links.

Richard Teder, a 20-year-old hopeful, will become Estonian’s first ever competitor at The Open after qualifying in dramatic circumstances.

Teder double bogeyed his final hole, but then holed out for eagle in a playoff to claim a dream spot at Portrush.
