There is a new Scottish name on one of the most prestigious prizes in amateur golf.

Scotland’s Calum Scott, the 20-year-old wonderkid from Nairn, has won the Silver Medal as the leading amateur at the Open.

The emotional Scott walked down the 18th green knowing he had won the race of 12 amateurs in the field at Royal Troon, with only four from the non-paid making it through to the weekend after brutal conditions in the first two rounds.

The R&A’s Open Amateur Series winner overcame Denmark’s Jacob Skov Olsen, America’s Tommy Morrison and Spain’s Luis Masaveu to win the coveted title, meaning he will be awarded the medal at Sunday’s Claret Jug ceremony on the 18th green.

And it will mean little to Scott that he stumbled over the finish line with five bogeys in his final nine holes, finishing on a +8 aggregate score.

“Super happy, excited, buzzing, relieved as well,” Scott told reporters at Troon. “Made it tough for myself coming in, but just super happy to come in and be the Low Am for this event.”

He is now in esteemed company as a recipient of the coveted Silver Medal. Past winners also include major champions Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick.

“Obviously there’s been a bunch of Silver Medal winners that go on to do incredible things,” he said. I’m not exactly sure what this will do. “I’ve got a year left at college, and we’ll see where that puts me. I think it does a lot for my amateur career and kind of helps me the next year or so as I transition into pro golf. It’s just a really cool accolade to have, to join some big names.”

Scott is the first Scottish winner of the Silver Medal since Sam Locke at Carnoustie in 2018.
