Hideki Matsuyama broke the PGA Tour scoring record in a season-opening win at The Sentry in Hawaii.

The former Masters champion finished an astonishing 35-under-par to overcome Collin Morikawa by three shots in a birdie fest on the Plantation Course in Kapalua.

Matsuyama, who finished with an eight-under 65 to storm to the title on Sunday, broke Cameron Smith’s record – set at the same tournament – by one shot with a birdie at the last.

“That last putt, it felt like if I make it, it’s going to be the record, so I’m so happy that it went in,” the Japanese star said, through a translator. “I was able to get a great off-season and get a fresh start this week and play well so it’s a great way to start.”

Morikawa, meanwhile, had to come to the terms with the fact his 32-under aggregate through 72 holes wasn’t enough for a tournament victory.

“Yeah, excuse my language, but f***, 35-under par, that’s low,” the American said afterwards. “He was matching me yesterday shot for shot, and I felt like I was playing lights out, right?

“Like, yes, you could leave some shots out there, but you shoot 11 under on any golf course, you’re going to be happy, right? Today he just never let up.”
