  • World No.1 hints at adding events to his schedule
  • “I am fully committed to playing more golf all this summer”
  • Hasn’t played in Scottish Open since 1996 at Carnoustie
TIGER WOODS | SCOTTISH OPEN

On the back of a miserable week at the Memorial Tourmament, where he recorded the worst 18 and 72-hole scores of his career, Tiger Woods has admitted he needs to play more tournament golf – boosting hopes that he might add the Scottish Open to his summer schedule.

Former world No.1 Woods, now languishing in 181st place on the rankings, is committed to playing in the Greenbrier Classic from July 2-5 but that is, so far, his only confirmed regular tour start between the US Open and Open Championship. He is also slated to appear in the Quicken Loans National, an event that benefits his own foundation, which takes place from July 30 to August 2.

At present, he is not committed to playing anywhere during the week of the Scottish Open – taking place at Gullane, below, from July 9-12 – but, speaking during the Quicken Loans National Media Day yesterday, he hinted that he is prepared to add more events to his schedule to improve his current poor form and world ranking.

CONTINUES BELOW…

“I’m fully committed to playing more golf all this summer,” said the 39-year-old. “I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me and I’m looking forward to it.”

As it stands, Woods is not eligible for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at the start of August, an event he has won eight times, on account of his poor world ranking. He acknowledges that the only way he can hope to go for a ninth win at Firestone is by playing more.

“I need to obviously start playing a little bit better to get into that event,” he added. “Now I just need to get my ranking up high enough so I can get into some of these events and continue playing.”

Woods’ has only ever played in the Scottish Open twice before, both times as an amateur.

It seems unlikely he would choose to play TPC Deere Run, a traditional American course, over a links such as Gullane.

He made his debut at Carnoustie in 1995, posting rounds of 69, 71, 75 and 78 to finish in a tie for 47th. He then returned to the Angus links a year later but missed the cut after rounds of 81 and 75. A month later, he turned professional.

Woods’ only subsequent competitive appearances in Scotland have come in the Open Championship (ten times) and the Alfred Dunhill Cup (in 1998).

The Scottish Open is scheduled opposite the John Deere Classic on the PGA Tour. If Woods was to add an event to his calendar, it seems unlikely he would choose to play TPC Deere Run, a traditional American course, over a links such as Gullane, particularly with the Open Championship taking place at the Old Course in St Andrews, on the other side of the Firth of Forth from Gullane, the following week.
