Tiger Woods has led the congratulations to Rory McIlroy following the Irishman’s dramatic Masters victory.

McIlroy, 35, defeated Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose at the first hole of a sudden death playoff to seal his fifth major title, his first since the PGA Championship in 2014.

More significantly, Masters glory for the Irishman saw him become only the sixth player ever to complete the career grand slam, 25 years after Woods became the fifth.

Unable to participate in this year’s tournament after sustaining an Achilles injury, Woods was quick to salute the latest recipient of the green jacket.

Welcome to the club @McIlroyRory,” tweeted Woods. “Completing the grand slam at Augusta is something special. Your determination during this round, and this entire journey has shown through, and now you’re a part of history. Proud of you!”

Another member of the career grand slam club, Gary Player, added: “I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Rory McIlroy on his historic win at the Masters and completion of the career Grand Slam.

“The drama of today capped off with his playoff victory was simply meant to be. This is one of the rarest and most difficult achievements in all of sport, something only now six golfers in history have ever accomplished.

“We are proud to add Rory to our exclusive club and no doubt he has set the standard for his era. To win all four major championships takes unwavering perseverance and the courage to overcome adversity time and time again in the face of immeasurable pressure few have ever experienced.

“Rory showed true grit today and also through the entire tournament.”

Three-time Masters champion Sir Nick Faldo also chimed in with his congratulations.

I’ve never been put through the wringer of emotions like that in the commentary box,” wrote the Englishman. “So pleased for @rorymcilroy and proud to have known him all these years since he was a whippersnapper in the @faldoseries!”

Here’s a selection of the other congratulatory messages that have poured in from across the sporting world for the new champ, including this extraordinarily classy message from the man he pipped to the post…
