TIGER WOODS | RYDER CUP

US Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III still hasn’t ruled Tiger Woods out of playing at Hazeltine in four months’ time.

The captain has been in regular contact with the 14-time major winner in recent months and, although Woods will certainly be at Hazeltine in a vice-captaincy role, Love believes that if he can get back soon, he can still make the team.

“My first concern is that he just gets back to playing,” said Love. “I’ve been asking, texting him, how are you feeling? How are you feeling? How are you feeling? I’ll watch like everybody else on Friday at 5pm to see what’s going to happen.

“He said he’s making progress and feeling better. We’re getting down to where there’s not that many tournaments left. Hopefully, he comes out blazing when he does come out.”

PGA Championship - Preview Day 2

Tiger Woods has registered for the upcoming US Open in two weeks’ time, but it’s still unclear as to whether he will tee it up at Oakmont. Hopes had been raised when video clips appeared of him hitting 300-yard drives at a Junior event on April 21 – but over two weeks ago the optimism nosedived after he struck three 100-yard pitch shots into the water at a media day for the Quicken Loans National.

But no matter what, Love thinks Tiger Woods will play a vital role in the team room and give them an advantage over Team Europe, saying they won’t have ‘one of the best players ever’ to chat to their team.

“He’s been so supportive from the very first day we started this two years ago,” said Love. “I’m relying on him, and obviously, his role will be different than Jim Furyk’s role or Tom Lehman’s role.

“We keep talking about who we needed to speak to the players on different nights. Why don’t we just have Tiger Woods? That would be pretty good. The other team won’t have one of the best players ever to speak to their team.”
