TIGER WOODS | THE OPEN

Tiger Woods missed the cut for only the second time in 21 Open appearances after struggling to seven-over-par in his fifth outing at St Andrews.

The 39-year-old, who famously dominated the links of the Old Course in 2000 to complete the career grand slam before notching his second Open title at the Home of Golf in 2005, finished T147 with only seven players posting a worse 36-hole score.

Woods had only missed four cuts in 77 major appearances prior to last year’s US PGA Championship but has now failed to pass the 36-hole mark in three of his last four starts and the first time in his career that he’s missed the cut in consecutive majors.

“I felt like I was playing well enough to win this event” – Tiger Woods

“I felt like I was playing well enough to win this event,” said Tiger Woods after finishing his round. “On the very first hole on the first day, I fat a sand wedge in the water. I fatted my 3-iron off the tee and then fatted my 8-iron into the green on the second

“It was just one thing after another. I had my opportunities but just didn’t get the ball close enough and when I did, I didn’t make them.”

Earlier in the week, in his Tuesday morning press conference, Woods vowed that he wasn’t ‘buried and done’ despite a terrible loss of form and injury over the past 18 months, maintaining that he still believes he can top Jack Nicklaus’ record of 17 major titles.

And after a St Andrews performance which is sure to have damaged his confidence after seemingly recovering some form at the Greenbrier Classic a couple of weeks ago, Woods said he refusing to take a step back and reassess where he’s going with his game and is targeting a win at the Quicken Loans National in two weeks’ time.

“Keep going forward,” he said. “I play in a couple of weeks in D.C., so looking forward to playing the Quicken Loans, and hopefully win that event so I can get into a place that I know very well .”
