Tom Watson ticks Wales off ‘bucket list’

2014 05 Tom Watson

Tom Watson “can’t wait’ for the chance to play” Royal Porthcawl when the Senior Open comes to Wales. For years the five-time Open champ has longed to play the Welsh course, and this July he will finally get his chance.

“Many a time I would travel over early to Ireland and other places in the UK to play courses I’d never seen before - especially ahead of The Open Championship,” said the US Ryder Cup Captain.

“Sadly, I never had the chance to visit Royal Porthcawl, although it was on my menu of courses to play for a long time. So to play in the Senior Open means I can now check it off my bucket list.”

Tom Watson has an idea of what awaits him, and he is impressed by the venue.

“Thanks to the wonderful electronic age we live in, I’ve been able to trawl through the Royal Porthcawl website in detail and I can see that this is a magnificent golf course and one which I just can’t wait to play.”

However, as all great champions will tell you, you can never be too prepared for a major championship, and Tom Watson has already been speaking to Welsh major winner Ian Woosnam in preparation.
"Woosie said that it’s just a really, really great golf course and he predicted that I would love it." - Tom Watson.

“I’ve heard a lot of great things about Wales and Royal Porthcawl from Woosie,” said Watson.

“I understand the terrain is beautiful and that the golf in general is excellent, not just at Royal Porthcawl but in other locations throughout the country.

“Woosie said that it’s just a really, really great golf course and he predicted that I would love it. From the pictures I’ve seen on the website and looking at the hole-by hole Stroke Saver guide, I get a sense that he will be right!”

Challenging Tom Watson

Awaiting Tom Watson is a field rich in talent and experience. Ryder Cup captains for 2010, Colin Montgomeire and Corey Pavin, will be in with a chance, as will Bernhard Langer and Fred Couples. Although, the man they may all have to beat is Miguel Angel Jimenez, winner on the European Tour just a few weeks ago.
