A professional DP World Tour caddie has avoided prison after sending sexually explicit messages and images to a 14-year-old girl.
Daniel Mulvey, a 35-year-old caddie from North Ayrshire, pleaded guilty to sending sexual communications and referencing sexual activity between July 8 and July 9, 2023.
Mulvey sent explicit Snapchat messages to his victim after meeting the girl and her friend at the TRNSMT music festival in Glasgow, where he asked for her details.
He sent multiple explicit messages to the 14-year-old thereafter. Mulvey said that he “didn’t care” when informed of the victim’s age and said he would have sex with her.
The teenager’s aunt discovered the messages and secretly recorded the conversations, with the evidence sent to the police as part of a sting.
Police were able to link the details on the Snapchat account to Mulvey and he was arrested at Manchester Airport on December 13 and taken to a police office in Glasgow.
Mulvey’s case was heard at Glasgow Sheriff Court and he pleaded guilty to a single charge of sending written sexual communications to the 14-year-old girl.
He was spared jail, with Sheriff Iain Fleming ordering Mulvey to do 150 hours of unpaid work at the sentencing on Friday 23 May.
Mulvey has also been placed on the sex offenders register and under supervision for 18 months.
According to the Daily Record, Mulvey was heckled by members of the public in the courtroom as his sentence was imposed.
A relative of the victim told the newspaper:” The sentence of 150 hours community service, reduced from 200 due to the early guilty plea, we thought was a joke.
“This gives no deterrent for men or woman in future to behave how they like and does not do enough to protect children.
“Over all we are extremely disappointed in the light sentence passed.”
Mulvey was a longtime caddie on tour, working with players including Guido Migliozzi and Kalle Samooja.
