Tyrrell Hatton has claimed that ‘bad luck’ cost him a better finish at the US Open on Sunday.

The Englishman recorded his best result in a major championship but was left to feel hard done by where his tee shot ended up on 17.

Hatton, 33, held a share of the lead at one point during Sunday’s dramatic finale before carding a pair of costly bogeys at the death.

And when reflecting on it, he pointed to the bad break on the penultimate hole.

“It was pretty tough day,” Hatton said. “I feel like for the most part I played pretty well although I did struggle a little bit on the restart with missing a few shots right.

“Then, yeah, the finish at the end hurts a lot. If you’re going to miss the 17th with that pin, you have to miss it right. I did my bit. I feel like I was extremely unlucky to finish where it did.

“Yeah, what happened on 17 is going to hurt a lot for a long time.

“It was the first time I’ve been in contention in a major, and that was exciting, and unfortunately, I feel like through a bit of bad luck I had momentum taken away from me and ultimately ended up not being my day.”

Hatton was then asked why it was bad luck and it’s fair to say that irked the LIV Golf man.

“Why was it bad luck?” he asked. “Why do you think it was bad luck? What kind of question is that?”

He continued: “You think stopping on the downslope in the rough? Like, that’s ridiculous.

“As I said, if you’re going to miss that green, you have to miss it right in the bunker.

“I’ve hit a decent – obviously not a decent tee shot, that would have been on the green – but I feel I’ve missed it in the right spot and got punished, which ultimately, I don’t think ends up being fair.”

In true Hatton fashion, his emotions completely flipped during the interview. He watched on as JJ Spaun holed the winning putt.

“Oh, he’s holed it,” Hatton said. “Unbelievable, what a putt to win. That’s incredible.”

Meanwhile, he even had a word for Robert MacIntyre, who fell just short of the American’s one-under-par winning score.

“He’s had a fantastic week,” Hatton added. “Finishing second on his own. He’s an amazing player.

“He won in Canada and Scottish Open last year, both events with his dad on the bag in Canada and winning his home Open was pretty epic and cool to see.

“He’s a great guy and someone that I have a lot of respect for. He’s had an amazing week. I’m sure he’ll be disappointed with how he’s just missed out, but he’s played amazing.”
