It was an ‘annoying’ finish Tyrrell Hatton’s DP World Tour return yesterday.

That’s according to the fiery Englishman, who was forced to settle for a three-under 69 at the Belfry.

The LIV man was a shot closer to the early Betfred British Masters lead, though, but for before making bogey at the venue’s famous 18th hole.

Clearly agitated after wrapping up his first round on the circuit since January, Hatton decided to sling his ball into the greenside lake.

The incident – capturing Tyrrell Hatton at his very best – was caught by Betfair, the tournament title sponsor, and posted on X.

After applauding the home star, fans found the funny side of the wet souvenir.

Hatton, however, tried his best to conceal his emotions before telling reporters at the Sutton venue he was just being himself.

“There are times when I wish I didn’t say certain words and some things come out that you wish you could take back, but at the end of the day it’s just a reaction,” Hatton said.

“I guess I can’t apologise for being myself.

“I played some pretty good golf today, missed pretty much every putt I looked at and don’t think I could have scored much worse to be honest.”

Asked about one of those key missed putts on 18, he added: “You’d rather hit it out to 20 or 30 feet and two putt. You hit an unreal bunker shot and then miss from three-and-a-half feet, it’s annoying.”

Before joining LIV, Hatton’s last appearance on the DP World Tour came in the Middle East at the Dubai Desert Classic.

His run at this week’s title marks the start of a Ryder Cup qualifying bid, with the 32-year-old set to tee it up in the Spanish Open and Alfred Dunhill Links Championship later this year.

Meanwhile, Sir Nick Faldo – the host of the British Masters – was ‘delighted’ to see his compatriot in the field this week.

“I’m delighted,” Faldo said on Wednesday. “[He] wants to come play a proper tournament.”
