One of Scotland’s most unique golf clubs has received a huge grant to build a new energy-efficient clubhouse.

Leadhills Golf Club – the highest in the country at 1,500 feet above sea level – has just had planning permission approved on their exciting new clubhouse project.

As reported by Golf Business, the South Lanarkshire club was awarded £290,000 by OnPath Energy to turn their vision into a reality. It is understood to be the largest grant ever awarded by the renewable energy firm to a golf club and accounts for 60 per cent of the funds for a project that is expected to cost just over £440,000.

OnPath’s backing will enable Leadhills to build a clubhouse that includes solar panels, improved heating systems and energy-efficient lighting.

“This is an incredible step forward for us,” said Amanda Davies, the development officer at Leadhills.

“The grant means we can move ahead with our plans to rebuild a new, sustainable clubhouse that not only meets the needs of our members but also serves the broader community.

“We’ve had tremendous support from locals, businesses, and schools, all of whom see this project as a key part of the future for Leadhills. The energy solutions we are incorporating will ensure we remain a focal point for the village while leading the way in sustainable tourism.

“We’ve held community consultation events, including a Facebook campaign and an open session in the village hall, where we received fantastic feedback.

“Local businesses, schools, and even the football club have written letters of support, highlighting the excitement around this development.

“The new clubhouse will not only benefit golfers but will also provide a reason for more visitors to come and enjoy the beauty of Leadhills and its surrounding areas.”

Robert Brown, a councillor at South Lanarkshire Council added: “By helping Leadhills Golf Club modernise its facilities and adopt sustainable practices, the fund is not only helping to preserve an important part of local heritage but also contributing to the economic vitality of the area.”

The course at Leadhills has been open for 85 years and is a pillar of the South Lanarkshire community.

It is also popular with visitors, given its distinction as Scotland’s highest golf course.

Leadhills is topped only by West Monmouthshire Golf Club – near the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales – which is officially the highest course in UK.
