Golf’s most demanding major is heading to America’s most demanding course. This 125th US Open promises to be carnage.

The notorious Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania is hosting America’s national championship for the first time since 2016, when Dustin Johnson lifted the title.

Scottie Scheffler is the overwhelming favourite to etch his name on the trophy this time around as the world No.1 bids to complete the third leg of a career grand slam.

Bryson DeChambeau is the defending champion after his nerve-shredding victory over Rory McIlroy at Pinehurst last year, while Jon Rahm will fancy his chances after a resurgent PGA Championship.

Thick, juicy rough will cause nightmares for players, with rain expected to make the course softer – and therefore longer – before Thursday’s opening round. Lightning fast greens will add to the fun.

The bunkered bet

His odds are as short as they are for a reason but we’re going to steer clear of Scheffler here. A resurgent Jon Rahm, who got the competitive juices flowing at the PGA Championship last month, feels a good price at Oakmont. He knows what it takes to win a US Open and finished T23 as Low Amateur at this Pennsylvania layout back in 2016. Another steady week at LIV Virginia leaves him in good shape heading into the third major of the season. It could well be his time.
