Caitlin Clark is, officially, one of us.

The first tee jitters got the better of the WNBA star in Florida today, as Clark almost skulled a fan with an errant drive.

She was playing in the LPGA Tour’s Annika Pro-Am at Pelican Golf Club and had to instantly reload.

The moment begs the question: why did so many fans line the ropes for an amateur’s tee shot?

Well, that can only be put down to Clark’s stardom, having revolutionised women’s basketball since turning pro in April.

The “Caitlin Clark” effect, all over again.

But the eager fans must not have read Clark’s comments ahead of her golf debut this week.

“I can get in the mid-80s, if I’m lucky, but usually I’m just praying to break 100,” the 22-year-old said after admitting she is an ‘average’ golfer with a 16 handicap.

It was her first sight of the course, however, so she can be slightly excused. “I haven’t even seen it,” Clark said of the Par 70 layout.

“I’ll be out there at 7am and hoping for the best. Find out where I’m supposed to aim, and I hope it goes there.”

It didn’t quite go where she hoped at the first attempt, but the second, well, found its way down the fairway.

Perhaps Clarke’s range session didn’t help, either.

Breakfast balls out of the way, there were some flashes of promise from the Indiana Fever guard.

She was filmed striping a cut to the middle of the third fairway before sinking a putt from the best part of 15 feet shortly after – and in the company of Nelly Korda.

Clark teed it up with the world No.1 for the first nine holes before playing with ten-time major champion Annika Sorenstam on the back nine.

A few more of those and Clarke might be on the road to an off-season goal she set in September.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do tomorrow. I don’t know what I’m going to do the next day. Maybe play some golf,” she said.

“That’s what I’m gonna do until it gets too cold in Indiana. I’ll become a professional golfer.”
