With Jordan Spieth in the rough at Muirfield Village on Sunday, the safest place to stand was the fairway.

The three-time major champion was competing in the Memorial Tournament, when his drive leaked right off the first tee.

A large gallery followed and lined the right side of opening hole, where disaster almost struck just moments later.

Spieth, 31, hit an errant shot towards the green that was inches away from striking a spectator in the head. While the broadcast footage was scary, the fan’s POV was terrifying.

X user Marc Condon shared the video that would certainly make a few think twice before getting so close at an event again.

First, here’s what was shown on TV.

Now, this is what the fans saw.

With Spieth virtually aiming in that direction, it did appear that some hardy spectators were standing in harm’s way to begin with.

Of course, the Spieth experience was complete as he got up and down for par on route to a two-over 72. The American finished T7, nine shots adrift of Scottie Scheffler.

Ahead of the final round, he shared what makes the world No.1 so impressive.

“I’m not going to sit here and say that I’ve ever had the kind of ball striking or consistency that he’s had,” Spieth started, “but certainly, all of us have had weeks or months or half a year or whatever where we feel that kind of control.

“What impresses me the most is his club face control is elite. It’s maybe the best there’s ever been as far as club face control.

“So, his consistency is ridiculous. And then that just leads to his distance control being phenomenal.

“There’s a shot in and the worst he’s going to do is 15 feet, and most guys are going to hit a good shot there, but for him that was, like, the worst shot.

“It’s elite consistency and it’s because of his tempo and club face control yields these kinds of results.”
