Brian Campbell was able to take advantage of a healthy dose of luck on his way to his first PGA Tour victory.

The PGA Tour’s shortest hitter looked to have the odds stacked against him, as he was pitted against Aldrich Potgieter, the longest hitter on the PGA Tour in extra holes at VidantaWorld.

After a half in pars on the first play-off hole, the pair headed to the tee on a par-5 that featured out of bounds hugging the right side of the fairway.

Potgieter was first on the tee and hit a drive over 320 yards safely in play. His opponent then stepped up and as the ball was in the air, it looked like he had shot himself out of the tournament, as a hard fade headed into the trees.

“Very low and out to the right, this is dicey!” said Smylie Kaufman, who was walking the fairway with the group.

Although it might have been dicey, Campbell got the break he needed, as the ball ricocheted back into the semi rough, albeit some 100 yards behind his South African opponent.

“That is the bounce of a career right there,” said Kaufman’s colleague in the studio.

“It’s sitting up, might have a tree issue, but… you see the white stake there by the cart, that ball was going to be out of play,

“He was going to have to retee it, it was going to be out of bounds and hitting his third from the tee. Now he’s got his second shot, a nice lie.”

“One-out-of-a-hundred,” Kaufman continued. “That ball was 20 yards right of that OB stake. The worst driver swing we seen from him in the last two days.”

Of course, Campbell still had to take advantage of his stroke of fortune and he certainly did that. A well hit lay-up left him with just under 70 yards to the hole and from there, he hit a wedge to less than four feet for an impressive birdie.

Meanwhile, Campbell’s opponent could only manage a par after missing from six feet to keep the play-off alive.

It was certainly an important win for Campbell. The 31-year-old now has an invite to the Masters and the PGA Championship to look forward to, as well as a ticket to the PGA Tour’s signature events, including the Players Championship.
