Bubba Watson has gone some way to proving his doubters wrong after putting in a magnificent display on the weekend to take the Northern Trust Open title by two shots from Dustin Johnson.

Watson carded successive bogey-free rounds of 64 on Saturday and Sunday to take his first title since winning the Masters in 2012.

Watson’s win comes just two-weeks after he blew a final day lead at the Phoenix Open, and the win was made even sweeter for the charismatic American thanks to the presence of his wife Angie and son Caleb, who hadn’t been there for his win at Augusta National.

“I never looked down, I never felt down that I haven’t won yet, but I just kept plugging along and somehow it fell in my lap. – Bubba Watson

“It was very nice. When I won the Masters, it was just me. Family members were there but not my wife and not my son who was just adopted at that point.

“You never know when your last win is going to be,” said Watson, who now has five wins on the PGA Tour. “My last win could have been the Masters, which would have been a great way to go out.

“But winning at the Northern Trust is nice, any time you can get another win. I never looked down, I never felt down that I haven’t won yet, but I just kept plugging along and somehow it fell in my lap.

“The history behind this tournament, it’s incredible and for me to be a part of this now is amazing. I always put it on my schedule. I always look forward to the challenge. It’s a good field every year because it challenges you. It’s always about you and the golf course. It’s not really us and the field and that’s why I love it.”

Is Watson a major contender?

The 35-year-old now has three top-10s in his last four tournaments; do you think the American is a contender for the majors this year? Join the debate here and tell us who you think will be adding their name to the history books in 2014.
