Fresh from hosting another hugely successful edition of the BMW PGA Championship, the Wentworth Club has unveiled plans for a restoration of its famed East Course.

Orignally designed by Harry Colt, the East Course is the little sister of the West Course but is far from a poor relation. Many regard it, indeed, as one of the UK’s finest inland courses.

Now, plans are afoot to restore it as close as practical to Colt’s original design, with architects from European Golf Design poring over archived files and historical information to establish a blueprint for the changes.

Through extensive bunker reshaping and re-moulding, a number of the course’s sand traps will be combined, whilst several of the East’s green complexes and fairways will also be reshaped and redefined.

A woodland management programme will enhance the golf landscape as part of the club’s continued commitment to sustainability.

The renovation is part of a huge investment into Wentworth’s golf provision, with a new state-of-the-art golf academy also in development. It will include three indoor teaching studios, a putting studio, an outdoor short game area and a café with outdoor seating.

A new par-3 course, rated against World Handicap System parameters, is also under construction.

Stuart Boyle, the club manager at Wentworth Club, said: “We are committed to providing a world-class offering for our members, creating a golf and country club experience which is cherished and admired the world over.

“The club is looking firmly to the future, while building on its distinguished heritage, as it strives to create a welcoming and friendly experience which prizes the family dynamic and creates pathways for future generations of golfers.”

“The renovation work on the East Course is a clear sign as we continue to strive to make a classic heathland test even greater while recognising the original roots that have made the layout so iconic.

“Meanwhile, the development of our new Golf Academy will only enhance the golf offering we have at Wentworth.”
