The Chilean is on an upward trajectory in the game, so who is Joaquin Niemann’s caddie?
Despite being a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, Niemann jumped ship to LIV Golf in 2022 and has become on the best players in the world.
Just ask Phil Mickelson. He reckons that Niemann is, in fact, the current No.1 in the world.
That’s based on the fact he’s won four titles on LIV, two of which have already come in 2025, and all with the same caddie.
So, who is his looper?
• Who is Joaquin Niemann’s coach?
• Who is Joaquin Niemann’s wife?

He’s taken a tumble in the world rankings in recent times, but Niemann has found considerable success with his caddie Gary Matthews.
The pair joined forces in 2020, but the caddie has over 20 years of experience carrying bags.
He began his caddie career in 2003 and has since worked with a number of high-profile players, including Sergio Garcia, Trevor Immelman, Luke Donald, Charl Schwartzel, Lydia Ko and Minjee Lee.
A very good golfer in his own right, having played off one, Matthews attended the University of Arizona where he was on the men’s golf team.
But his life on the golf course has been more successful as a caddie. Matthews, born in South Africa, picked up Niemann’s bag after the 2020 US Open.
Previously, Niemann worked with caddie Dean Elliott, and the pair teamed up at the 2019 Presidents Cup, as well as for his win at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier.

The switch has paid dividends for Niemann, though, as he won the Tiger Woods-hosted Genesis Invitational in 2022, just months before switching for the Saudi-backed LIV Golf league.
Niemann and his caddie have also worked together at several major championships, albeit without making a mark.
It’s no secret that Niemann’s caddie has pocketed eye-watering cash whilst working with his man, though.
In 2024, Matthews raked in over £1 million from LIV events alone, assuming he was paid 10% for a win, 7% for a top ten finish and 5% for anything below.
Meanwhile, Matthews helped Niemann break a world record at the Tour Championship at East Lake in 2021. Niemann broke Kevin Na’s mark for the fastest PGA Tour round ever.
Of course, his caddie took preparations seriously, strategically emptying the golf bag before heading out.
“He had three golf balls,” Matthews said. “He didn’t have the usual nine. He didn’t have a rain cover. He didn’t have any little instruments that we had. He only had one glove, five tees.”
