Lexi Thompson has had a remarkable career, so who is the American’s coach?

In 2023, the Florida-born golfer began working with a new swing coach and that sparked a turnaround of success.

It’s after having one coach for most of her professional career – her father, Scott.

In that time, Thompson won 15 times on the LPGA Tour, including one major championship – the 2014 Kraft Nebisco Championship.

Meanwhile, Thompson, who announced she would retire at the end of the 2024 season, has lifted multiple other titles and competed in seven Solheim Cups.

So, here’s a bit more about the coach behind the final push in Thompson’s career.

• Who is Lexi Thompson’s caddie?

• Who is Nelly Korda’s caddie?

The coach Thompson has been working with recently is Tony Ruggiero.

According to Golfweek, the pair began working together in the summer of 2023.

Ruggiero has worked with other major champions and tour pros, including 2009 US Open winner Lucas Glover and Robbie Shelton.

In October 2023, Ruggiero wrote on Instagram: “Always working & getting better!

“Lexi been doing some really nice work! Plus a few laughs were had! BTW that driver was smashed.”

Thompson’s coach also posted a video of his work with her brother, Curtis, who has caddied for the tour star during her career.

As well as working with her father, Thompson has also spent brief stints with coach Jim McLean. She rehired McLean in 2020, for another spell together.

• Who is Scottie Scheffler’s coach?

• Who is the coach of Nelly Korda?

She said: “I worked with Jim for about a week before I left (for the ANA Inspiration).

“He knew my swing better than anybody growing up, so I was like, let’s just go back to maybe old Lexi and see him and we changed a few things. It was good, helped me a lot.

“He has a lot of videos; lot of notes and it was great to see. I worked with him when I was 12 or younger, so it was great to see those old swing videos.”

Meanwhile, mental coach John Denney is another figure who has been in and out of Thompson’s team throughout her career.

Thompson worked with Denney in 2016 and 2017 before returning to him in 2021.

“It’s a small world,” Thompson said at the time. “He’s always kept in contact so he’s a great individual.

“No matter how strong you are, you definitely need some guidance out there because it can get tough.”
