Return of the MAC-ilroy

Is Rory McIlroy back? The Caddie takes a look at the Northern Irishman’s performance at last weekend’s Masters

Scottie Scheffler may have taken the top prize at this year’s Masters, but there was another name making noise across the famous Georgia property, and that was the one of golf’s finest, Rory McIlory. Playing a fantastic bogey-free 64 (-8), the 32-year-old catapulted himself into second place, equaling the lowest Sunday round record ever at Augusta.

It’s the first time in a while we’ve seen Rory play like this. His last major win was at the PGA Championship in 2014 at Valhalla Golf Club, Kentucky, which he won just three weeks after winning The Open at Royal Liverpool, although his most recent win came in 2021 at the Wells Fargo Championship. Despite this lapse in time, McIlroy has been able to secure 13 top-10 finishes in the majors since his last win, so it was about time we saw him challenge again.

Back to the weekend’s events; Rory only needed 22 putts which included holing out from off the green three times, allowing him to produce a score of -8 which involved six birdies, one eagle and 11 pars.

The former world number one approached the final round with an “all out” attitude which proved to be very successful. His approach shot to the par 5 13th was unbelievable. Sitting at 200 yards, he hit a midiron to 10ft, just above the hole and proceeded to send it home with the ball rolling in the hole to take him to -7 for the round and just 4 back.

However, let’s not forget at this point Rory had made no errors with the worst score on his card being a par. His consistency and composure was back to his best as the world number 7 made stead pars on his way to the 18th, where it’s safe to say he saved the best for last.

The bunker shot at the 18th was a touch of class and certainly flashbacks to the old Rory. But it was his response that captured the imagination and will live long in the memory. Enthusiasm, joy and a release the likes of which we’ve seen so rarely from Rory in recent years but remincent of his early all-conquering swagger in those early years.

Walking off the course, he commented that he was happier than ever… and that can only be a positive sign of things to come.
