If there’s a better putter in golf than Cam Smith, we’re yet to find them.
The Aussie star’s Scotty Cameron played a pivotal part in him lifting the Claret Jug at St Andrews, and that was no fluke.
While we’ve no doubt that Smith is naturally gifted with the flatstick in his hands, keeping the putter in check doesn’t happen by accident.
The Ripper GC captain is in action at the weather impacted Australian PGA Championship, where the DP World Tour caught him in action on the putting green.
Smith was using a simple but effective bit of kit to keep his putter moving in the right direction, and it’s something you’ll rarely see him without when on the practice green.
He was using the Pro Path Putting Mirror, from the back2basics brand. You’ll see plenty variations of these mirrors out on tour and there’s good reason for that.
In the clip, Smith says that it helps him to see his set-up while he’s over the ball, making sure that he’s square every time. That’s helped by this mirror featuring a line which you can align with your shoulders.
It’s not just shoulder alignment that this can help with, though. Smith will be able to see where his eyes are over the ball. If your eyes are in a different place over the ball on each putt, you’re going to see things very differently.
As well as that, almost every putting mirror allows you to place tees in the ground, to help you guide the head of the putter. It’s a simple piece of kit, but it can quickly point out where you might be going wrong on the greens.

Clearly, the method works for the 31-year-old. On the LIV Golf League in 2024, he was top of the Putting Average stat, with 1.52 putts per green on average. That might not be the most advanced stat, but we all know that Smith is one of the best in the world on the greens.
The best part about his practice method might be that getting a putting mirror is inexpensive, and it’s easy to use. You don’t even need to be on a putting green to try it out. If you’re looking for something to upgrade your putting practice, you should really look to this.
