Alex Noren’s chipping routine might look unusual, but there’s method to the madness.
After all, the Swede is a ten-time DP World Tour winner and was a member of the 2018 winning Ryder Cup team, so we’re taking notes.
He now plies most of his trade on the PGA Tour and is consistently one of the top scramblers on the American circuit.
So, we can hear you ask. What is the routine? Allow him to explain…
“I figure that if I hit about 100 chips all around the green and try to have fun – hit some draws and fades, hit some high and some low, I’ll get a feel for what I’m doing,” he told bunkered.
“I want to get help from my coach to get the number of reps I need in all different winds and slopes, so I like to hit chips from every part of the practice green.”

Now for the technical aspects, here’s how Noren goes about his business (and how you can, too).
“When I’m working on my chipping, I like to have my coach or caddie hold a club at about waist height in front of me, to get a feeling in my technique.
“I’m trying not to bring the butt end too close to the ground, trying not to get any lag and not get any hinge in my wrists.
“I hit the really low ones to get lag on the club, so it helps me to not scoop it and have no wrist hinge.
“Standing really close to the ball helps me with sharpness in the bunker and sharpness with chipping. If you look at Tyrrell Hatton, he just takes a little divot and it just shoots off, it’s really nice.”
There are few players better to take chipping advice from than Noren. In 2024, he’s ranked 8th in SG: Around the Green on the PGA Tour.

Meanwhile, Shot Scope data suggests that a 10 handicap only gets up and down from the fairway 53% of the time, so it’s time to put Noren’s tips to the test.
Here’s how other handicaps fare:
Up and down % from fairway by handicaps
0 HCP 69%
5 HCP 61%
10 HCP 53%
15 HCP 48%
20 HCP 45%
25 HCP 38%
