Chipping can be one of the first parts of the golf game to abandon you on the course. One minute you’re confident in getting up and down from anywhere, the next minute you’re hitting soul-destroying duffs and skulls.

It can happen to the best players in the world, too. Remember back in 2015 when Tiger Woods was duffing his way around the greens? Sorry to bring that up, but it’s a stark reminder that it can happen to the best in the world. There’s no shame in admitting your short game is in a bad way.

So, what’s the solution to the chipping yips? Jesper Parnevik, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour, took to Instagram to offer some words of wisdom.

• Viktor Hovland: This is the most important thing in my chipping

• What tee should you play from? This formula gives the answer

In this clip, he shows an all too familiar sight of a golfer hitting duffs that don’t reach the green, and thins that sail over the green, into even more trouble.

Chipping yips – the fault

The problem, he explains, is that these golfers are too rigid and are using their arms, rather than rotating their body.

That leads to the club getting way too steep, which causes players to either dig into the turf, or hit the equator of the ball and send it flying over the back of the green.

While there might be other issues at play, this is often the root cause.

Chipping yips – the fix

The solution, Parnevik says, all comes from more movement, even though we’re only trying to hit the shot a short distance.

The Swede recommends getting a feeling of sitting down more into the shot and turning with the body, rather than the arms and shoulders doing all the work.

It might feel like you’re going to hit your ball a mile over the other side of the green, but once you work on your touch, it’s going to massively help your short game.

Clearly, it works too. Parnevik’s subject goes from hitting pretty horrible shots to hitting a high, floaty pitch that actually drops into the cup.

Parnevik, who is certainly one of the biggest characters on the PGA Tour Champions, does offer an alternative solution in the comment section.

“Yes, it’s the only way to get rid of chip yips,” he says. “Well, putting from everywhere is the other solution…”

Sure, putting from everywhere might work sometimes, but we like the high, soft pitch much more.
