It’s important for golfers to understand why we need good posture. Then, it’s important to understand how we can achieve the perfect golf posture every time.
Look at the best golfers in the world and you’ll see they all have an athletic posture. That’s not by coincidence
The first reason you want an athletic posture is from a performance aspect. If we hinge well and we’re in a strong posture, that’s going to allow us to rotate around three areas to the best of our ability. If you’re in a great position to start your swing, you can rotate around your hips better, around your mid-spine, and also around your right shoulder. By finding a neutral posture, it helps us to rotate around those pivot points.

• One of the tour’s longest hitters has a way to gain yardage
Then, there’s the second aspect which is injury prevention. If we can set up well, then specific areas like our lower back will be under less load in the swing because you’re not having to make compensations.
Find the perfect golf posture
This is my drill to get the best possible posture in the golf swing. As you can see on the left side of the main image, you want to start by standing upright, with a straight line down from your ear, through your shoulder and your hip. You then want to feel pressure in your mid-foot. Place a club down the front of your body, before you start to hinge, as a reference point.
As you move, you want your foot pressure to stay in the mid-foot and your hips to move back. Use the golf club for external feedback so you hinge better.

• Tony Finau’s ‘adapting’ method will help you make more putts
You also want to maintain the length at the top of your spine, so that your chin is pointing down. Then, you want to be relaxed around your shoulders, with a neutral mid-spine position.
If you can follow these steps, you’ll get into the perfect golf posture and set yourself up for a strong foundation in your swing.
