The fairway wood is a club that can strike fear into amateur golfers. But, according to three time DP World Tour winner Ewen Ferguson, it doesn’t need to be that way.

It’s not an uncommon sight to see high handicappers lashing at the ball with their fairway woods. Unsurprisingly, it rarely results in anything good, either.

Ewen Ferguson certainly sees it in pro-ams too. bunkered caught up with the DP World Tour star to get some advice on a tricky club in the bag.

    1. Hold the finish

“Something I see in this shot is that I’m holding my finish at the end of the swing. It’s something I think about, particularly with fairway woods, as it means I keep my rhythm throughout the shot.

“If I was trying to hit a lower shot I would probably try and shorten my follow-through and tee the ball down, get the ball a little further back in my stance, but still hold the finish.

“It’s all just basic fundamentals and basic changes in my set-up, but it makes a big difference to hitting the shape of shot I want.”

     2. Keep the rhythm

“I’m not hitting the ball and losing my balance and I’m not falling about. It sounds so obvious, but people don’t do it enough.

The biggest mistake I see amateurs making with their fairway woods is with their rhythm. I watch a lot of players with fairway woods or hybrids, especially off the deck, getting really quick and jumpy, but you need to try and let the club work for you.”

• Copy Cam Smith’s putting routine

• Scottie Scheffler has a new putting grip!

So there you have it. If you want to hit your fairway woods better, make sure you complete your swing and keep your rhythm nice and smooth. It doesn’t need to be difficult.
