One-handed pitching

2015 03 Carlton Chip

As a coach, I like to emphasise just how important pitching can be in terms of improving your game and ultimately reducing your handicap.

We will all miss greens at some point - but does your pitching technique hinder your chances of saving par? I often see golfers flicking their right hand and either thinning pitch shots or catching them heavy.

With this drill, I promise you will become more left hand dominant in your technique and increase your consistency.

Gripping the club with your left hand only, grip further down than you normally would and place your right hand behind your back.

With 60% of your weight on your left side, swing the club back with your left arm only. As you come into impact, maintain weight on left side and rotate the body. Through impact area, maintain the loft of the club and I guarantee your strike will improve.

New balls = More energy

I like to change my ball at least three times throughout a competitive round. It is amazing how the flight of your ball can be influenced by scuff marks or thinned shots.

Every time I change my ball it gives me a burst of positive energy, like I’ve got something new. I like to think it has positive effect on my score. Give it a go yourself.
