Padraig Harrington has always been one to think outside the box. This, however, might be his strangest piece of golf advice yet.
The three time major champion, who is now turning his hand to instruction with his Paddy’s Golf Tips series on YouTube, took to Twitter to explain why a funky looking driving range drill is actually great for your golf.
The clip, originally posted by puttingwithellie on TikTok, shows the Swedish golfer swiping away eight balls from a driving range mat. The balls are lined up in two lines of four, and she doesn’t stop moving between each one.
You might think that this is just a bit of fun and a way to show off on the driving range, but according to Harrington, it can have a real benefit to your golf.

• Scottie Scheffler has a new putting grip!
“I honestly don’t think there’s a better drill to do for golfers to improve their coordination,” Harrington said.
“It’s hard to do it if you’re off plane or out of sync. It naturally improves foot work/timing. It improves your grip and grip strength.
“Plus there’s the added bonus of helping you keep warm. #PaddysGolfTips.”

Judging by the snowy scene in this clip, not much would help you to keep warm here, but the rest of Harrington’s advice certainly makes sense.
While none of us are ever going to do anything like this on the course, it does stand to reason that if we can make solid contact with a ball while moving around the driving range, we’re going to be able to do it while stationary.

And, like Harrington says, if your swing is off plane and out of sync, you’re really going to struggle to match up your movements and make contact with the ball, let alone get it off the ground.
Also, we know how important rhythm and timing is to our golf swings. If you start swinging out of your shoes in this drill, you’re going to struggle to keep up with your movements around the range mat.
Now, it’s worth noting that if this drill goes wrong, it could make you look rather silly. But, that’s what the driving range is all about. If you can pull it off, it’s not only going to be a great party piece, but it’s going to help your game on the course.
