When Rory McIlroy talks about hitting his driver, you listen, even if your name is Tiger Woods.

The pair teamed up in a video for TaylorMade, which is simply a golf nerd’s dream. For 11 minutes, the duo, who have 20 major titles between them, discuss how McIlroy gets the most out of his driver.

At first, the 2025 Masters champion shows off his new, low, controlled driver. But, before long, Woods asks to see a shot that flies as far as possible.

It’s no surprise, either. Driving distance has been a weapon for McIlroy throughout his whole career and this year, that’s no different. The five-time major champion averages 320 yards off the tee, which is second in the tour’s standings.

But, how does McIlroy hit his driver so far? As he explains to his fellow TaylorMade athlete, there’s a movement in his swing that produces impressive speed.

• I increased my swing speed by ten miles per hour. Here’s how.

• Gavin Abson: How tight should you grip your driver?

“I do this exercise in the gym,” the 36-year-old explains.

“I’ve got a medicine ball in two hands and it’s like a shotput throw. I’ll pressure into my left side, drag my left foot back, and then plant it and feel like everything drives from my right hip and I throw the ball.”

Basically, McIlroy starts with his weight in his lead side, before taking it back to his trail side. That takes him to the top of his backswing. From there, he feels rotation and power through his right hip, into and through the ball.

At this point, Woods asks his fellow career grand slam winner if he’s thinking about positions during his driver swing. While McIlroy does say that his left knee can get a little active in his driver swing when he’s really going for it, it’s not something that he’s worried about.

“If I’m trying to hit one 330 in the air, I’m just trying to move the club as fast as I can.”

We can’t guarantee that this feeling will get you hitting the ball as far as McIlroy, but if it can add some power to your drives, then it’s worthwhile.
