1. Unbeatable weather

With an average temperature of 24C and 326 days of sunshine per year, Cyprus boasts one of the warmest climates and warmest winters in the European Union. Coastal locations in Cyprus have around 180 hours of sunshine in December (that is, as much as in May in London!).

2. It’s largely unheralded

If you want a change from the popular European destinations like the Algarve in Portugal or Andalucia in Spain, Cyprus is lying in wait as a new venture with the first course built there as recently as 1994. While it regularly ranks as one of the world’s top holiday destinations, more and more people are beginning to realise its quality as a golfing paradise and are bringing their clubs, too.

3. It’s closer than you think

Despite being way in the eastern Mediterranean and south of Turkey, Cyprus can be reached in as little as four hours with regular flights from both Edinburgh and Glasgow with a range of airlines, including Jet2, easyJet, Thomson and British Airways.

4. It’s home to Sir Nick’s ‘Mediterranean masterpiece’

Opened for play in 2010, Elea Golf Club incorporates numerous natural features and boasts stunning views out to see. Designed by six-time major winner Faldo and 6,900 yards in length, the layout wander through groves of mature carob and olive trees, while dramatic outcrops of weathered limestone strike a contrast with the dark green fairways.

5. Four of the best courses are within 20mins

As well as Elea Golf Club, there is also the Mackenzie & Ebert-enhanced Minthis Hills, which is found in the grounds of a 12th century monastery. It’s also 500m above sea level, making it slightly cooler in the summer heat! Secret Valley, meanwhile, plays through a spectacular valley with a host of tricky water hazards, while Aphrodite Hills has been described as ‘the perfect mix of challenging pot bunkers, pristine fairways and generous tiered greens’.

6. They’re all near the resort of Paphos

One of the hottest places in Cyprus, Paphos relies heavily on tourism and there are four resorts in the district: Kato Paphos, Coral Bay, Latchi and Aphrodite Hills. It’s also been selected as a European Capital of Culture for 2017.
