Celebrate 125 years of golf in Gran Canaria

GRAN CANARIA

Get ready to celebrate this summer with a trip to Gran Canaria, where Real Club de Golf Las Palmas is celebrating 125 years of golf this year.

It goes without saying it’s the oldest of the seven courses on the island, having been founded by a number of golf-mad Brits and local golfers hooked on the great game.

The port at Las Palmas was a popular stop for Brits on their way to India on cruises back in the late 1880s. They used to stay in the local area and decided that a golf course was required. Good thinking. That course has since been joined by a further six layouts, making this island one of the absolute go-to hotspots for sun-seeking golfers.

Tourism is on the up in the area with the addition of the brand new Santa Monica Suites Hotel, a four-star hotel that’s been completely re-done and is perfect for golf accommodation. There’s a 10% discount available now to celebrate the opening. Just head to santamonicasuiteshotel.com for further info and rates.

Top picks in Gran Canaria

1. Real Club de Golf Las Palmas

The course of the moment, this is a cracking test set in the shadow of an old volcano and is where Rafael Cabrera-Bello played as a kid.

2. Maspalomas

Set in the south and easy walking, this course is surrounded by huge sand dunes with tall pine trees throughout. Luckily, the fairways are nice and wide!

3. El Cortijo Club de Campo

One of the best courses in Spain, never mind on the island, this is a former home of the Spanish Open and is
a clever test of your game.
