Paradise awaits in Mauritius

2016 01 Mauritius

Over the last few decades, Mauritius has established itself as a hugely popular holiday golf destination.

Its appeal is obvious: a tropical climate; luxurious resorts; beautiful beaches; exceptional affordability; and, most important of all, 11 superb golf courses for you to take your pick from.

The island sits in the Indian Ocean about 1,200 miles off the south-east coast of Africa and lay uninhabited until the early 16th century when it was settled by Portuguese sailors. Today, it is home to a just over one million people as well as some of the most enjoyable golf courses you will ever peg it up on.

The five-star Belle Mare Plage resort, on the north-east of the island, has two excellent 18-hole layouts for you to choose from: the Links and Legend. The latter has been the host venue for the MCB Tour Championship on the European Senior Tour since 2010.

On a similar note, the Heritage Golf & Spa played host to the island’s first-ever European Tour event in 2015, the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, won by South Africa’s George Coetzee. Located on the Domaine de Bel Ombre, the magnificent course is part of a five-star experience at the Heritage Resort.

Le Touessrok, meanwhile, is one of the most spectacular golf courses in the world. Contained within the tiny island of Ile aux Cerfs, the Bernhard Langer-designed layout is thought to have cost as much as $11.5m to build and opened for play in 2003. In the time since, it has cemented its place as one of the top places to play on Mauritius, with its beautiful white sand bunkers, ocean views and colourful, indigenous fauna creating a veritable feast for the senses.
