Opened in 1895, this is one of the oldest 'new' courses in the world.

St Andrews' New course was designed by Old Tom Morris - who else? - and Edinburgh-based engineer Benjamin Hall Blyth at the order of the R&A, who were reacting to the overwhelming popularity of the Old.

The New features a number of similarities to its older sibling, including a traditional out-and-back layout, shared fairways, and a double green. The locals are said to prefer the New, because it's more defined than the Old, though it is not as quirky and certainly less dramatic.

But don't let that put you off. The New is a wonderfully fun, with the par-4 10th - which is played through a narrow gorge and demanding a blind second shot - the highlight.

If you're in the Home of Golf, put the New on your to-play list.
