Hanbury Manor – Golf Course Review
Located in the beautiful countryside of Hertfordshire, Hanbury Manor offers a unique experience with its stunning golf scenery set against the luxury Jacobean-style manor hotel, dating back to the 1890’s.
Originally designed by Harry Vardon, and then redesigned by the son of golf legend Jack Nicklaus, the 18 hole championship course is sure to challenge those who take the fairways. Its rewarding style set-out provides golfers double fairways, fast paced greens and plenty of threatening water. The PGA championship course measures over 6,600 yards from the regular medal tees.
The championship course has hosted a number of high level competitions over the years. From the English Open, The Men’s PGA European Open and more recently in 2020, the English Championship held by the European Tour which saw Englishman Andy Sullivan triumph to victory.
The course has seen some big changes with the two nines being completely contrasting to one another. The front nine is laid out in an modern american style with its thick rough and fast fairways compared to the second nine gives a traditional parkland set up with fairways shadowed by trees.
A course that requires a strategic thought as many holes are out there to catch you out. The toughest hole on the course (the 8th) requires two excellent shots to get close. Out of bounds runs along the right hand side making accurate tee shots a necessity to have any chance of hitting the green. However, the elevated green which is protected by a lake on the left and a hollow to the right – no wonder it’s the hardest hole on the course!
As well as it’s fantastic golf course, Hanbury Manor also offers guests the chance to stay and unwind at the beautiful Marriott hotel. The hotel offers guests a variety of spa treatments, leisure centre activities and a wide range of food and drink selections including an award winning restaurant for everyone to enjoy.
Guests can also look to venture out the hotel grounds into the countryside and soak up the beautiful town of Ware. Enjoy a peaceful walk at Rye Meads nature reserve where you can witness some beautiful wildlife, visit the Scotts Grotto and Hertford Museum and learn about the history of the unique town. Round off the perfect day with a walk
down the high street and pop into the Punch house to relax with a beverage of your choice.
Hanbury Manor provides not just golfers with a relaxing experience, families can also enjoy a break with many attractions there to please everyone’s needs. Only just over an hour outside London along the A10, it’s ease of access drives you away from the big city and into the peaceful, relaxed scenery of the countryside.
