Sustainable performancewear brand Reflo has created a special capsule collection called ‘Phoenix Surf Club’ ahead of this year’s WM Phoenix Open – recognised as the largest net zero waste sporting event in the world.

The concept behind Reflo’s capsule collection was inspired by an unexpected twist, when Arizona – home of the tournament’s venue, TPC Scottsdale – emerged as an unlikely surfing capital with the unveiling of Big Surf in 1969. After a remarkable run, “the world’s first authentic inland surfing facility” closed its doors in 2022 after being purchased by a California-based real estate developer.

In response, Reflo has designed Phoenix Surf Club, a curated collection of exceptional, sustainable apparel that pays homage to Arizona’s remarkable history as an unexpected surfing hub within the United States.

The product designs in the new capsule are inspired by a mixture of golf, surfing, water, and the desert. Each garment is marked with a one-of-a-kind limited-edition patch and the collection comprises of three hoodies, two polo shirts, and a t-shirt. Only 400 of each garment has been made, available exclusively at the retail tent on-site at the WM Phoenix Open, as well as Reflo‘s website.

“It’s hard not to be captivated by the story behind Big Surf, so we wanted to pay our own tribute with the Phoenix Surf Club capsule collection and we’re really happy with how the designs turned out,” Reflo‘s co-founder, Rory MacFadyen, said.

“It is brilliant to be back at the WM Phoenix Open again this year. For 11 consecutive years, this tournament has been recognised as the largest zero waste sporting event in the world. Reflo was founded to disrupt an industry full of ‘greenwashing’ about sustainability, so we are proud to partner with a sports event that is truly setting the standard in sustainability.”

Founded in 2021, Reflo turns single-use plastics destined for landfill and discarded coffee grounds into technical sports apparel. With its performancewear predominantly crafted from recycled polyester, Reflo’s fabrics use 50% less energy and produce 70% less carbon than virgin polyester, requiring no new oil.

Operational staff at the WM Phoenix Open will be wearing the Bohai 2.0 polo shirt during the tournament. This is the first product using Reflo’s new ‘Reloop’ initiative, a circular apparel solution with garments designed to be recycled at the end of use.

Reflo does this by ensuring Reloop garments are of mono-fibre, where 100% of the product is made from one form of recycled material.

Reloop is a world first in the golf industry and allows customers to send back their used garments to be recycled. Reflo has plans to roll this initiative out further with future collections, as part of its mission to become the most sustainable apparel brand in the world.

Reflo was a partner for the 2023 edition of the tournament, recycling the equivalent of 14,768 plastic bottles for use in the event apparel, as well as planting 923 trees. This year, Reflo will be recycling the equivalent of 36,200 plastic bottles whilst planting over 1,600 trees – one for every product sold on its website, at the event, and for each piece of apparel supplied to staff.
