Charlie Woods has come up short in his first-ever attempt to qualify for the US Open.

The 15-year-old son of Tiger Woods entered a local qualifier on Thursday in Port St. Lucie, Florida, competing alongside some seasoned players in an 84-strong field at The Legacy Golf & Tennis Club.

It’s the second high-profile qualifier for a pro event Charlie has played in. He attracted heavy media attention back in February when he shot 86 in a Monday qualifier for the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic.

Five spots were up for grabs to progress to sectional qualifying, and the younger Woods did at least take some learnings from his last attempt on a tough day of scoring.

Woods shot a nine-over-par 81 on a challenging layout with a 74.6 course rating. He made an unnerving bogey-double start but he settled with a birdie on the par-3 fifth, reaching the turn in 40. After coming home in 41 shots, his scorecard included three doubles, four bogeys and one birdie.

It should be noted that only four players in the whole field broke par at The Legacy. The winner, Michael Buttacavoli, is a 36-year-old former tour pro who posted an impressive three-under 69.

The USGA had accepted more than 10,000 entries across 109 local sites for the 124th US Open, which is played this year at Pinehurst No.2.

Charlie was attempting to qualify at a much younger age than his father did; 15-time major winner Tiger played his first US Open aged 19 at Shinnecock back in 1995.

The 48-year-old has won three US Opens in his career – 2000, 2002 and 2008 – and he is set to receive a special invite to play in this year’s championship after his five-year exemption from his 2019 Masters win expired.
