The road to the US Open is a long one, and for Charlie Woods, it is just about to begin.

Charlie, the son of Tiger Woods, is making his second attempt at qualifying for  a professional event on Thursday – only this time the ultimate goal is a spot at a major championship.

Woods, 15, was unsuccessful in his first attempt back in February when he entered an 18-hole pre-qualifying round in a bid to make the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic.

He drew huge media attention during that Monday qualifier but had a day to forget with a 16-over-par 86 at Lost Lake in Florida.

Then, at his American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) debut last month, the younger Woods finished in a tie for 32nd after tough rounds of 78, 81 and 78.

Woods will be looking to take those learnings into an 18-hole event at Port St. Lucie as local qualifiers begin for June’s 124th US Open at the famed Pinehurst No.2. He has an 8:18am ET (1:18pm BST) tee time at the Legacy Golf & Tennis Club.

The field consists of 84 players and only five will advance to a marathon 36-hole qualifying day in June.

The USGA has accepted more than 10,000 entries for this year’s tournament, with 109 local qualifying sites staging events across May and April.

Tiger Woods has won three US Opens during his garlanded career – 2000, 2002 and 2008 – but has never won at Pinehurst No.2.

The 48-year-old is not exempt for this year’s major after his five-year exemption for winning the 2019 Masters expired last year.

It is seen as a given, however, that the USGA will extend a special exemption to the 15-time major champion, who last played in the US Open in 2020 at Winged Foot, where he missed the cut.
