Rory McIlroy sprang a surprise during the opening round of the 2023 Masters, agreeing to do a “walk and talk” for television in the middle of his round.

Coming off a birdie at the eighth to get him back to one-over for his round, the world No.2 popped in an earpiece to speak with CBS commentary duo Jim Nantz and Trevor Immelman.

McIlroy provided the pair with some thoughts on how his round had gone so far and talked them through his shot selection for his approach into the ninth.

It was, without question, brilliant television but many viewers were left surprised at the Irishman’s decision to do the interview in what is, arguably, the most important week of his year.

Remember: he is just a Masters victory away from becoming only the sixth golfer to complete the career grand slam.
