1. The Ryder Cup trophy is made out of gold and stands 17 inches tall, nine inches wide and weighs four pounds.
2. The trophy was commissioned by Samuel Ryder, the founder of the Ryder Cup.
3. He donated the trophy in 1927 and it first appeared at a send-off for the British team departing Southampton for Worcester, Massachusetts, for the first match.
4. The man at the top of the trophy is believed to be Abe Mitchell, Samuel Ryder’s personal instructor and club professional at Verulam Golf Club.
5. Ryder paid £250 to make the trophy.
6. The original Ryder Cup belongs to the PGA in Great Britain and was awarded in the original trust deeds of Samuel Ryder.
7. But the original trophy is NOT handed out to the winners and rarely makes a public appearance because of its iconic nature.
8. The PGA of America has a full size, identical replica and there is a travelling Ryder Cup that is identical to the original trophy and used at promotional events.
9. Engraved on the base of the trophy are the scores of the original matches starting in 1927.
10. Members of the winning Ryder Cup squad receive replica trophies to commemorate their victory.
11. In 1985, the Europeans received a two-thirds sized cup to commemorate their appearance.
