Finishing runners-up can be a sour pill to swallow, but never has it tasted so good.

Nick Dunlap, a sophomore at the University of Alabama, made history last week, but forfeited a huge benefit of his shock triumph.

The 20-year-old became the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson in 1991 and for that reason, couldn’t take home the monster first-place prize.

South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who came closest to dethroning the rising star, walked away with just north of $1.5 million, instead.

Dunlap had missed the cut in his previous three PGA Tour starts but turned a corner in California to earn exemptions into the Masters, PGA Championship and the Players Championship.

Whether the American turns professional or not will determine what life on tour looks like for Dunlap this season, but the dangling carrot is prize money.

Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas also bagged bumper pay checks courtesy of his success, claiming over $600k in a tie for third place.
