Angel Cabrera is out of prison and now plotting his return to major championship golf.

Cabrera, 54, was released in August after serving 30 months in custody over multiple gender violence convictions relating to two former partners.

He has already played an event on the PGA Tour’s Latinoamerica Developmental Series in his native Argentina last month, but is now targeting a return on perhaps the biggest stage of all.

As a past Masters champion in 2009, Cabrera has earned a lifetime exemption to play in the first major of the year, and recently outlined his “dream” to compete again at Augusta National.

Cabrera currently doesn’t have legal access to the United States, but Masters chief Fred Ridley says he will “definitely” be welcomed back to the tournament if he can obtain a visa to travel.

“Angel certainly is one of our great champions,” Ridley said ahead of the Latin America Amateur Championship in Panama. “As we all know, he has been unable to participate in the Masters the last couple of years due to legal issues.

“Presently we have been in constant contact with Angel’s representatives. He presently is not able to enter the United States. He doesn’t have a visa, and I know that that process is being worked through.

“We certainly wish him the best of luck with that, and we’ll definitely welcome him back if he’s able to straighten out those legal issues.”

Cabrera has not played in the Masters since 2019, where he missed his third straight cut in the tournament.

According to Golfweek, he is ramping up his comeback plans, identifying his return on the PGA Tour Champions circuit next month.

He is set to return at the Trophy Hassan II at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Morocco from February 22-24, and will not need a visa to enter North Africa.

A week later, he is scheduled to play the Visa Argentina Open in Buenos Aires, a tournament co-sanctioned by the Korn Ferry Tour.
