A golfer from Dundee could be set for a place in the game’s record books after racking up his EIGHTH hole-in-one.

Iain McMurray, 80, had his latest ace on the 17th at his beloved Downfield last Tuesday, just two weeks shy of his 81st birthday.

Remarkably, that means he has now had a hole-in-one in each of the last six decades!

“We are all trying to knock the ball in the hole but it’s largely down to luck,” Iain told The Courier. “I’m 80 now and even though I still play three times a week I can’t hit the ball like I used to .

“However, the 17th hole is only wee – about 160 yards – so I knew I had a chance.

“It’s still pretty special when it happens though.”

The same hole was the scene of Iain’s first-ever hole-in-one back in 1975. Four years later, he repeated the trick on the club’s 12th hole.

Another pair of aces at the 12th followed in the 1980s, before he holed at out at the third at Downfield in 1998. In 2006, he aced the sixth at Downfield before registering his solitary hole-in-one away from the club in 2013, on the fourth at Strathmore.

Last week’s effort brought his total tally up to eight.

Downfield professional Barry Smith remarked: “It really is an impressive achievement to have scored a hole in one regularly throughout his life. I certainly don’t know of anyone else who can boast such a record.

“Iain says it’s down to luck, which it is to some degree, but even at 80 he is still an accomplished golfer.

“In his younger years, he was a respected and very competitive opponent out on the course.”
