By now, you probably know how much Bulgaria has evolved as a golf destination since the turn of the millennium.

But while the main area of focus on golf in the country tends to be on the Black Sea coast and the likes of Thracian Cliffs and BlackSeaRama, the area around the capital, Sofia, is also surging in popularity.

Boasting two excellent courses, St Sofia and Pravets, the capital is the ideal short break golf location and is just a three-hour flight from the UK. It’s unbelievable value-for-money too.

Staying downtown, there are an unlimited number of bars and restaurants within walking distance and a pint of top local beer will barely exceed €1. Sold yet? If not, here are a few more details about the courses.

Designed by Paul McGinley, St Sofia, below, is an excellent example of what the Ryder Cup winning captain brings to the table as an architect and is particularly well-known for its first-class quality of service.

St Sofia

Pravets Golf, main pic, meanwhile, has the Stara Planina mountain as its backdrop and is an upscale golf resort with a championship course and all the expected amenities the holiday golfer requires.

It has hosted a number of noted events and has earned sparkling reviews since opening three years ago.

As mentioned before, Sofia is just a short flight from the UK, with options from Edinburgh, Gatwick and Manchester (easyJet); Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and Stansted (Ryanair); and Luton (Wizz Air).

You can also snap up the following three-night package for less than £300.

Sofia golf package for 8 – €299 (£265)

• 3 nights sharing double/twin rooms with breakfast;

• 1 round at St Sofia Golf Club;

• 1 round at Pravets Golf Club;

• All transfers included
