The row over Patrick Cantlay reportedly causing a split in the American team room rumbles on.  

Sky Sports reporter Jamie Weir tweeted earlier today to say that “multiple sources” had told him Cantlay believes players should be paid to play in the Ryder Cup and that the world No.5 is refusing to wear a cap at Marco Simone this week in protest. 

Weir also reported that Cantlay and Xander Schauffele have distanced themselves from their American teammates and are sitting in a separate area of the team room. 

US captain Zach Johnson was quick to deny the reports, telling NBC that this is “legitimately the closest team room I have ever been associated with”.

However, a PGA Tour pro has now taken to social media to throw thinly disguised shade at Cantlay. 

Brent Grant, a 27-year-old from Florida, currently ranked 442nd on the Official World Golf Ranking, posted the following update on Instagram: 

“If anyone was wondering. Yes ego and a greedy mindset doesn’t get it done in the Ryder Cup. Guess which of the players the Tour hostage for the last two years.” 

Whilst Grant didn’t mention Cantlay by name, it’s clear to who and what he was referring.

As the news travelled around Marco Simone, the European fans taunted Cantlay – first on the opening tee ahead of his afternoon fourballs match with Wyndham Clark against Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick…

And then later in the round as they waved their hats at the American…
