It’s not just drivers where you’ll find forgiveness in your golf bag. In fact, at the other end of the bag, we can find clubs with just as much help. Here’s our list of some of the best putters for high handicappers 2024.
What does a high handicap golfer need to look for in a putter? Chances are, if you’re reading this piece, you want a putter that’s going to help you hole more short-range putts, but also improve your efforts from long range on the putting green.
For that to happen, there’s a good chance you want a high MOI design in your putter. This will usually take the form of a mallet putter, rather than a traditional blade putter.
Even still, mallet putters are popular amongst some of the best putters in the world. They are the kind of clubs that can help players at the top of the game, but also those who need lots of help.
With that being said, here’s our list of the best putters for high handicappers in 2024.
Best putters for high handicappers 2024
PROS
- Silver finish makes for a premium look
- Classic shape inspires confidence
- Affordable while still offering premium quality
CONS
- The feel is very soft. For some, it might be too much
First on our alphabetically ordered list is an option from the Cleveland HB Soft Milled range. Every putter in this line features a very soft feel, and if you’re a high handicapper, you’ll probably want to go for the 11S model.
It’s a mid-mallet that, although might appear smaller than some of the others in this list, is still large enough to offer plenty forgiveness.
We love the silver finish which gives this putter a premium look, while it doesn’t break the bank. What we will say is that if you like something that’s a firm feel, you might want to look somewhere else. However, if a soft feeling putter is up your street, you’ll love this.
PROS
- Soft but responsive feel off the face
- Descending Loft Technology really does get the ball rolling nicely on the green
- Alignment line easily gets you aiming correctly
CONS
- Busy look might not be for everyone
Cobra’s 2024 range of putters features some cracking options. If you’re looking for a large mallet, then this is the one for you. The Stingray is designed for players with a straight back, straight through stroke and is made with forgiveness in mind.
As you can see, it’s a very large head shape. It has a single alignment line, which is going to help you get putts started on the right line, particularly if you use a line on your golf ball. One of the key pieces of technology that you’ll find in all of Cobra’s 2024 putters is the Descending Loft Technology.
We’ve tested this out and it really does help you get a pure roll on your ball on the greens. A fantastic option.
PROS
- Triple Track Technology combines with Callaway balls for easy aim
- White Hot insert provides great feel off the face
- Stroke Lab shaft is great for added stability
CONS
- The three lines won't be for everyone, but there's loads of other options
It wouldn’t be a list of putters without options from Odyssey. The first of those is this, the Eleven Triple Track. As you can see, this has a design on the top of the head which you can pair up with a Callaway Triple Track ball. If you’re someone who struggles with alignment, this could be really beneficial to you.
This putter features one of Odyssey’s legendary White Hot insert, which has been around for ages for a reason. It’s going to give you incredible feel and confidence on the greens. As well as that, this putter features a Stroke Lab shaft.
You might not think that a shaft is going to make a huge difference in a putter, but this will help with stability, something that high handicappers will certainly want more of.
PROS
- Versa alignment technology is proven to help
- Another option with the White Hot Insert
- A shape that will make you feel like early 2010's Luke Donald
CONS
- Hard to fault
This putter is a great option for two big reasons. Firstly, the No.7 shape is a classic design, made popular by former world No.1 Luke Donald. While that was a while back, the fanged shape lives on and for good reason. It works!
Secondly, the Versa alignment system is very helpful in getting players to aim properly. For many golfers, horizontal lines, rather than traditional alignment lines, actually help them to line their eyes to the target more effectively.
While this putter has been used by some of the best in the world, there’s no doubt that it can help golfers who struggle with their putting.
PROS
- Looks stunning
- If it gets us 21% closer to the hole all the time then we're all for it
- Front weights are interchangeable for added adjustability
CONS
- You pay for the high quality
Part of the latest range from Odyssey, the 2ball is another classic shape.
What we particularly like about this putter is the alignment line that runs through the balls. While the two balls help you to easily get your golf ball in the middle of the putter, the alignment line is another safeguard to make sure you’re on the right track.
Another aspect you’ll see in the full range of Odyssey putters is the face insert, which has been designed by artificial intelligence.
This helps to make this putter more consistent when you don’t quite strike the middle of the face. In fact, Odyssey say that your ball will get, on average, 21% closer to the hole than with a conventional putter. Sounds good to us.
PROS
- Three alignment lines offer a lot of help
- Sits very flat to the ground which inspires confidence
- Solid but responsive feel
CONS
- You might find more forgiveness elsewhere
A putter that first appeared in 2022, the Ping Mundy still makes our list for one of the best putters for high handicappers in 2024.
This is a mid-mallet design and what we particularly like about it is the very strong alignment lines that run through the head. You’ll be under no illusions on whether you’re aiming correctly with this head shape.
This certainly isn’t the largest head shape in this list, but we like the straightforward design that it offers golfers.
PROS
- We love the bold and long alignment line
- High MOI makes this really forgiving
- Square footprint makes this easy to line up
CONS
- Price tag is heavy
A brand-new addition to Ping’s flagship PLD (that stands for Putting Lab Design) range, the Ally Blue 4 is perfect for golfers looking for a premium option with their flatstick. This range features in bag of players such as Tyrrell Hatton and Viktor Hovland and it can certainly help you on the course too.
This is a high MOI and easy to align mallet, both features which will help those who want forgiveness on the green. This is an all-new, fully machined, three piece design, which has a square footprint and a full-length alignment aid on the crown.
A stunning looking and very high performing premium option.
PROS
- Hugely adjustable which will appeal to lots of players
- High MOI design for more forgiveness
- Thin face gives super feel
CONS
- Price puts it up against the specialised putter brands
As you would expect from PXG, this putter is packed with technology. The Battle Ready II range has a shape suitable for everyone and if you’re a high handicapper, this is a great option.
The first thing you want to know about these putters is that they have the thinnest face of any putter on the market. That helps golfers as PXG are able to place the centre of gravity further back in the head, creating lots of forgiveness. Also, this shape of putter in particular employs the same Precision Weighting Technology as PXG’s woods, which helps make this a very adjustable putter.
If you like to tweak the setup of your clubs, this is for you.
PROS
- You know that you're getting quality from this brand
- Superb feel from the club face
- Fantastic stability levels
CONS
- Scotty's are going to command a healthy price tag, but that's for good reason
I can tell what you’re thinking: “Where’s the Scotty Cameron?!” Well here it is, and it’s beautiful. If you’re a high handicapper who wants a premium design putter with all the tech needed to help you hole putts, you’ll love this.
The Phantom X9 comes with a clean topline, which has just one alignment line. Not only does this look the part, but it will help you get your ball started on track. This has a precision milled solid stainless steel face, with wings integrated to the rounded shape at the back of the putter.
This putter is close to being fully face balanced, so is likely to suit a player who has a near straight-back, straight-through stroke.
PROS
- TruPath Alignment makes it easy to get started on line
- Wing back shape provides stability and looks great
- A very stable design
CONS
- Difficult to fault, but if you don't get on with this shape, there's plenty others in the Spider range
A real classic when it comes to mallet putters, the TaylorMade Spider range has something for everyone. This shape however, is brand-new in the latest Spider release. It features a winged back and a low-profile design compact design.
What makes this perfect for higher handicap golfers is the fact it’s designed with stability in mind. Although it might feel like a blade, golfers can really expect high MOI in this option from TaylorMade. Saying that, this isn't just for high handicap golfers and Shane Lowry is a perfect example for that. The Irishman is using one of these mallets at the moment and it certainly seems to be working for him.
Also, the True Path Alignment system helps you to better visualise the line of your putt, something we all need help with. Certainly a great looking putter from TaylorMade.
PROS
- A thing of beauty
- Three alignment lines help to frame the ball nicely
- Brilliant feel from the milled face
CONS
- We would say price, but they make no mistake this is premium
Last but not least, it’s a super-premium option from TaylorMade, which certainly looks the part. When the designers at TaylorMade were given the brief for these putters, they were told that perfection was the only option.
While it might be made with the best in the world in mind, this range of putters can also help those who need more guidance on getting the ball in the hole. This is another brand new shape to the TaylorMade line. A mid-mallet crescent shape with three alignment lines makes it ideal for those who struggle with putting. These are made with 303 stainless steel, which is milled to provide an exceptional feel.
Just because you’re a high handicapper, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get a quality putter.
