5. Tommy Armour
The highest score ever recorded by a professional in a tournament came courtesy of Armour, who needed 23 strokes to see out the 17th hole in the 1927 Shawnee Open. After hooking ball after ball out of bounds, Armour finished with a 21 on his card. However, after some debate about the accuracy of the number, he declared upon reaching the clubhouse that it should in fact be a 23.
