Until recently, Westwood was seen as the frontrunner for the gig, having thrown his hat into the ring long ago. As far back as January 2019, the Englishman said he would “love” to captain in Italy. That, of course, was before he embarked upon an Indian summer that led him to win the Race To Dubai in 2020 and qualify for Padraig Harrington’s side last year. It seems that has convinced him it’s too early to be picking up the armband. “It’s almost a full-time job nowadays and that is something I can’t commit to while I’m in the top-50 and still competitive,” he told The Telegraph in November.
