A brand-new golf circuit exclusively for women has been launched in Scotland.

The Scottish Women’s Amateur Golf Tour, which is set to stage its inaugural event at Royal Dornoch later this month, is the brainchild of veteran Scots pro Alan Tait.

The man behind the Get Back To Golf Tour and Cack Handed Golf Tour, Tait told bunkered.co.uk that he felt compelled to create a new female circuit after noticing the lack of competitive playing opportunities for women.

“I know a lot of girls who play and, in chatting to them, the whole ‘when are you going to create a women’s tour’ kind of became a bit of a running joke,” explained Tait.

“But the more we spoke and the more I thought about it, I came to realise it’s actually a really good idea and something that we should have.”

The inaugural season will comprise of nine 36-hole events between April and September, taking it some of Scotland’s most prestigious venues, including Scotscraig, Dalmahoy, West Kilbride and Fairmont St Andrews.

There will be two separate order of merits – one scratch and one nett – with the top six players from each at the end of the nine events qualifying for the grand final at Cabot Highlands (formerly Castle Stuart) on September 22.

Entry fees for each event are priced at only £65 per person, with a yearly membership available for just £85.

The tour is open to any female golfer with a handicap of 36 or better and Tait is keen to see as many players as possible sign up to take part, whether they’re from Scotland or otherwise.

“This isn’t just for Scottish golfers,” he stressed. “It’s open to everybody. English golfers, Irish golfers, Welsh golfers – I’ve even had somebody from Sweden get in touch to see if she can take part, too.

“There’s no age limit, either. Young or old, it doesn’t matter. I want it to be competitive, great value and hopefully something that will become its own little community, which is something I think is lacking right now.

“The response so far has been absolutely incredible and I’m really excited to get going.”

Tait admits that he is treating this year as a ‘beta’ season but already has big hopes for next year and beyond.

“It would be great to create something that has 12 or 14 events and comprise, say, 200 members within three years,” he added. “That’s quite ambitious perhaps but I’m committed to making this a success.

“This is something that has been lacking prior to now and I’m confident this is the start of something really good.”
