• Men’s golf action is finally underway at Rio 2016
• Adilson Da Silva of Brazil hits opening tee shot down the middle
• Twitter responds to Royal and Ancient game’s Olympic return
Shortly after 7.30am local time (11.30am UK), Brazil’s Adilson Da Silva struck the first Olympic golf shot in 112 years as the sport made its return to the Games at Rio 2016.
The 44-year-old split the fairway with his opening drive to officially begin the 72-hole men’s strokeplay competition and, predictably, Twitter had plenty to say about the matter.
Even some of the game’s biggest names were tuning in to cheer on their compatriots…
Can’t speak French? Levet said: “Who said that golfers don’t like the Olympics? Come on the Blues! @gregbourdy @JulienQuesne @FranceOlympique… a background for four days.”
There was also plenty of love doing the rounds for the Rio course designer Gil Hanse. Hanse, who co-designed the Scottish Open venue at Castle Stuart Golf Links, won a tender process to create the layout and, judging by comments on Twitter, he’s done a pretty impressive job.
In the main, people seemed to be enjoying watching golf become part of the world’s biggest multi-sport event for the first time in over a century…
That said, not everybody was happy to see golf taking centre stage at Rio 2016…
One man who has been loving every minute of the Olympic adventure so far? Scottish caddie Craig Connelly. He’s there looping for Martin Kaymer and, by all accounts, is having the time of his life.
You can follow the ‘Wee Man’ here – and we strongly suggest you do. His account of the Games so far has been golden!
